Proper yacht window maintenance can add years to the life of your marine glass and prevent expensive repairs. Florida’s harsh combination of intense UV, salt air, and humidity is especially tough on marine windows. Here’s a practical maintenance guide from our technicians.

Rinse After Every Outing

Salt residue is the #1 enemy of marine window seals and frames. After every trip on salt water, rinse your windows thoroughly with fresh water — paying special attention to the gaskets, frame edges, and any hardware. This simple habit dramatically slows corrosion and seal degradation.

Clean Glass with Marine-Safe Products

Never use ammonia-based cleaners (like Windex) on marine glass — they can damage seals and tint films. Use a dedicated marine glass cleaner and a soft microfiber cloth. For polycarbonate windows, use a plastic-safe cleaner only, as standard glass cleaners can cause hazing.

Inspect and Reapply Sealant Annually

Check the sealant bead around all your windows at least once a year, ideally before hurricane season. Look for cracking, shrinkage, or separation from the frame. A simple recaulk with marine-grade polysulfide or polyurethane sealant can prevent leaks for another 3–5 years.

UV Protection for Polycarbonate Windows

Polycarbonate (Lexan) windows yellow and craze with UV exposure. Apply a UV-protectant polish (like Plexus or 303 Aerospace Protectant) every 2–3 months. This is especially important in Florida where UV intensity is extreme year-round.

Check Hardware and Latches

Inspect all hinges, latches, and opening mechanisms regularly. Stiff or corroded hardware puts stress on window frames and seals. Lubricate with a marine-grade silicone spray and replace any failing hardware before it causes frame damage.
