Hurricane season in Florida runs June through November, and preparation is everything. Your boat’s windows and glass are critical structural elements during a storm — and failing seals or cracked glass can lead to catastrophic flooding. Here’s a complete pre-hurricane checklist for your marine windows.

Step 1: Inspect All Window Seals

Walk the entire vessel and press around every window frame. Any flex, soft spots, or visible cracks in the sealant bead are potential failure points in storm-force winds and waves. Have any questionable seals professionally resealed before the season begins — don’t wait until a named storm is approaching.

Step 2: Check for Existing Cracks

Small cracks that are manageable under normal conditions can catastrophically fail under hurricane-force pressure differentials. Have any cracked glass replaced before storm season. Tempered glass that has already begun to fracture is a liability waiting to happen.

Step 3: Inspect Hatches and Portlights

All opening ports and hatches should close and dog down securely. Test every latch and gasket. Portlights that don’t seal completely can allow dangerous water ingress in beam seas or storm surge. Replace worn gaskets and adjust any sticking hardware.

Step 4: Consider Storm Boards or Fabric

For vessels stored on the hard during hurricane season, plywood storm boards or marine-grade hurricane fabric offer an additional layer of protection for large window panels. Your yard may have specific requirements for boats stored on their property.
